Wildlife tunnels have become a hot topic in transportation, ecology, and mitigation of wildlife-vehicle collision. The current research being done has indicated that the construction of these tunnels has to be done with wildlife in mind taking into consideration natural routes, natural aversions, and ways to attract animals into their use. Among the most important factors of construction are the size of the tunnel, the pathways leading into them and the strength of the boundaries leading animals into them. While tunnels in some areas have proven to be effective at averting human-vehicle collision more effort needs to be made in researching landscape wide effects of tunnel use. The benefits of such systems currently appear to be outweighing the risks, but more research should be done to verify and modify the suspected research results.
